Tourist visas for Burma

Hilary Clarke writes

I am having difficulty finding out how to apply for a tourist visa for Burma online. Do you know where I can do this? I have tried phoning the Myanmar Embassy but nobody answers.

The Burmese have begun to embrace the internet. A new website ( will enable tourists to apply for an e-Visa from September 1, 2014. A BETA version of the site is currently being tested through which a small number of applications can be processed.

It is thought that the tourist e-Visa will cost $50, though this may change before September. Visas should take one week to arrive, are valid for 28 days and must be used within three months of the application date.

Alternatively, the Myanmar Embassy is in Mayfair, at 19a Charles Street, London W1J 5DX. It accepts visa applications by post and in person (10am-noon). You can download the blissfully simple application form from its website,

Send the form with your passport, two photographs on a white background, a copy of your flight or tour itinerary, a postal order for £14 (cash if applying in person) and a prepaid special delivery envelope for the passport’s return. Turnaround time is fairly swift - around a week - though there are delays at busy times. Note that the visa is valid for only three months from the date of issue - not from the date you arrive in Burma.
