Officials devised the new rules for balloon flights in Bagan

The department of archaeology and national museum under the ministry of culture has tightened the rules for the operators when flying over the area’s pagodas.

According to the new rules, Balloons must now fly between the altitudes of 90 metres (300 feet) and 600m (2000 feet), and land well away from the ancient buildings.

The new rules were discussed over a three-month period with the operators concerned, as well as the ministry of hotels and tourism and the department of civil aviation (DCA) and the operators must follow the flying routes and rules approved by the relevant departments.

The ballooning season runs from October 1 to the end of March and currently three operators such as Balloon over Bagan (BOB), Oriental Ballooning Company and Golden Eagle Ballooning are operating in Bagan.

The price for balloon flight charges between US$ 350 to US$ 400 for a trip and the cost includes insurance through an international provider.

According to DCA Myanmar’s tourism boom has encouraged a number of new operators to set up, however, not only in Bagan but also in Mandalay, other attraction sites.

Oriental Ballooning and Golden Eagle Ballooning also operate in Bagan and other popular tourist sites such as Inle Lake and Hsipaw areas in Shan state and ancient Mrauk U city and Ngapali beach in Rakhine state.
