Huangshan City, established as the scenic support area for Yellow Mountain (Mt. Huangshan), has become a tourist city that includes Yellow Mountain Scenic Spot and many other attractions. It is located at the south end of Anhui Province, between 117°02'—118°55' east longitude and 29°24'—30°24' north latitude. The city has neighbors of Jingdezhen and Wuyuan County of Jaingxi Province in its southwest edge, Kaihua, Chun'an and Lin'an of Zhejiang Province in its southeast edge, Xuancheng City in its northeast, Chizhou City in its northwest.

It is a region with a long history and splendid cultures. Shexian and Yixian Counties were established more than 2,000 years ago. In the Jin Dynasty (265-420) it was called Xin'an Shire. Until the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when the name was changed to Huizhou, the city was famed for Hui businessmen, Hui carvings, Xin'an school of painting, Xin'an medicine, Hui architecture, Hui cuisine, and Hui opera (one of the tonalities of Beijing Opera). It got its currently name in due form from April, 1988.

Located in the subtropics, the city has a typical Subtropical monsoon humid climate. It is clearly divided into four seasons with short spring and autumn as well as long summer and winter. The average annual temperature ranges from 15 C (59 F)-16 C (60.8 F), while the average annual rainfall ranges from 1,395-1,702mm. There is no severe winter cold in most areas of the city. The comfortable weather affords good opportunities to travel the city and its stunning environs throughout the year.

It is known as the treasure land of animals and plants. There are more than 3,000 kinds of plants and more than 490 species of wild animals here. Many of them are so precious that they are under state-level protection. There are also more than 30 kinds of well-known tea brands both at home and abroad, including Maofeng Tea, Taiping Houkui Tea, Qimen Black Tea and Tunxi Green Tea. You can not only buy every kind of tea but can also experience tea culture first hand in tea history hall. In addition, popular local products are nice for you to buy when traveling there, such as the chrysanthemum flowers, Santan loquats, Huizhou Chinese torreya, gyrophora and She County kumquat. Wan'an compasses and Huizhou carving on wood, bamboo and brick are well-known traditional handcrafts.

You should not miss the local delicious food and special cuisine there. Originating in Shexian County, Hui cuisine with more than a hundred year's history is one of the Eight Major Cuisines of China. Representative dishes in Hui Cuisine includes Mandarin Fish (Chou Guiyu), Steaming Shiji, Stewed Shi'er and Chicken and Huizhou Odorous Bean Curd. The abundant snacks in the city will also satisfy your appetite, specially including Youjian Mao Doufu (Fried Odorous Bean Curd), Xie Ke Huang (Yellow Crab Shell), La Ba Tofu and Stir-fried Pond Snail (Chao Tianluo).


Since it is a tourist city with a pleasant climate, travel plans need not be interrupted by weather. So the sights of the city, such as Tunxi Ancient Street,  Xidi and Hongcun Ancient VillagesTangyue Memorial Archway, Flower Mountain and Enigma Caves can be visited throughout the year as can Yellow Mountain with each season offering different appealing features.

The transportation in the city is efficient. Huangshan Airport operates domestic flights to Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hefei, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Chongqing as well as international flights to Seoul. Many trains daily run directly to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hefei, Jingdezhen, Nanchang, Xiamen and Fuzhou. There are also luxury buses everyday to the main cities in south China including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai, Wuhan, Jingdezhen, Suzhou, Wenzhou, and Hefei.
