Sihanoukville, originally called Kampong Som, is a port city in southern Cambodia. This city sits on a headland ringed by pristine beaches, overlooks the Gulf of Thailand and offers lost of activities from sunbathing and swimming to snorkeling and scuba diving, to boat trips and jungle hikes, etc... With a lay back atmosphere, Sihanoukville is rapidly a popular destination for those who want to get away from cities and spend some days for relaxation.

What to do?

Beaches and islands are main attractions for holiday makers to Sihanoukville. As a tropical getaway, people can just lie on the beach and relax all day. Famous beaches are Victory Beach, Serendipity Beach (The most popular beach in the city hosting a number of hotels, restaurants and other attractions), Ream Beach (beautifully landscaped by mountains and waterfalls), Ochheuteal Beach ( located near the city center and hence the most action packed beach in the city) and Independence Beach (also hose to the popular Independence Hotel).

For active visitors, there are a lot of things to do and see such as enjoying water sports (snorkeling and Scuba diving or exploring the marine life in Koh Rung Group, 14 miles offshore and in Koh Tas, 6 miles off shore) and visiting Ream National Park as well as Kbal Chhay Waterfalls.

Moreover, holiday makers can fulfill the vacation with shopping tour around the city and experiencing the fabulous nightlife.

In Sihanoukville, there are four distinctive seasons. From November to February the weather is cool and dry; from March to May it is dry and hot. From June to August the Sihanoukville is hot and wet (in July, the temperature can reach 37 degrees); from September to October it is cool and wet. Monsoon rains are more frequent and usually last 1 to 3 hours in the afternoon.
The cooler months from September to February are the best time to the beach town, especially in the end of the rains in November.

Travel tips

On the beach, there are all manner of hawkers sell about everything such as seafood, fruit, drinks, herbal remedies and traditional massage. Some of them have been known to pilfer unattended possessions. So, keep close watch on your valuables, or leave them at a trusted beachside shack when going for a swim.
Also, take a note that Cambodia is a conservative society, which reflects clearly on the local people's choice of beachwear. And you can show your respect for the local culture by choosing modest beachwear.
With transportation in Sihanoukville, should always agree on a price beforehand. Ask your hotel to make arrangements.
